Here is an article from The Heartland Institute concerning the Administrations willingness to allow Russia to drill for oil where we can not. I thought they were for independence from foreign oil? It would seem that if they were they would let American Companies drill for oil off of our own coasts. Here is an excerpt from the article:
Russian oil companies are preparing to drill for oil and natural gas in Cuban waters closer to Florida than U.S. energy producers are allowed to drill, the Washington Times reports.
A federal moratorium on oil and natural gas production in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico restricts energy companies from recovering much-needed natural resources within 125 miles of the west coast of Florida. Energy production in the Eastern Gulf would create thousands of jobs, bring in substantial revenues from royalties and production fees, and mitigate the long-term decline in domestic energy production.
Environmental activists have induced a production paralysis in the Eastern Gulf, claiming the risk of oil spills is too great to tap these valuable natural resources, despite a longstanding record of safe energy production in the Western Gulf. These environmental objections are becoming even less tenuous with the announcement that Russian oil companies will be drilling for oil less than 100 miles from Florida lands.
A February 2010 Pew Research Center poll reported 63 percent of Americans support offshore energy production.
Even in Florida, the public supports offshore oil and natural gas production.
